Whether you’re planning a visit or simply curious about this remarkable project, this episode offers a comprehensive overview of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.

Welcome to the Northern Rivers Rail Trail Podcast, your go-to source for all things related to the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. I'm Jo and I'm Evie. Today we're diving into the how, what, when and why of this incredible project that's transforming the Northern Rivers region.

Let's start with the basics. Evie, what exactly is the Northern Rivers Rail Trail? The railway line in New South Wales. Once completed, it will span 132 kilometres, connecting the Willem Bar to Casino, passing through towns like Byron Bay and Lismore.

The trail is designed for walking, cycling and, in some sections, horse riding, offering a unique way to experience the region's stunning landscapes and heritage. That sounds fantastic. How did this project come about? The railway line ceased operations in 2004, leaving the corridor unused.

Local communities and councils saw an opportunity to repurpose the corridor into a rail trail, inspired by similar successful projects in Australia and around the world. The idea was to create a space that promotes outdoor recreation, tourism and economic development, while preserving the historical significance of the railway. It's great to see such a positive transformation.

When did the development of the trail begin and how is it progressing? The development is being carried out in stages. The first section, known as the Tweed section, opened in March 2023. This 24-kilometre stretch runs from the Willem Bar to Crabs Creek, passing through charming villages like Stoker's Siding and Boring Bar.

The Richmond Valley section, from Casino to Bentley, opened in March 2024, adding another 13.4 kilometres to the trail. Construction on the Lismore section, connecting south Lismore to Bentley, began in January 2024 and is expected to open later this year. The Byron Shire section is currently in the planning and approval stages.

So, it's steadily coming together. What can visitors expect when they explore the trail? Visitors can look forward to a diverse experience. The trail traverses lush rainforests, rolling farmlands and picturesque villages.

Along the way, there are numerous points of interest, including historic railway stations, bridges and tunnels. For instance, the Boring Bar Range Tunnel is a 524 metre long tunnel that's home to glow worms and microbats, offering a unique natural spectacle. The trail also provides access to local cafes, art galleries and markets, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the local culture.

That sounds like a perfect blend of nature, history and community. Why is this project so significant for the Northern Rivers region? The rail trail brings multiple benefits. It promotes healthy lifestyles by providing a safe and accessible space for outdoor activities.

Economically, it's expected to boost tourism, bringing visitors to local businesses and creating job opportunities. Environmentally, it encourages sustainable travel and repurposes existing infrastructure. Culturally, it preserves and celebrates the region's railway heritage, connecting communities along the route.

It's truly a multifaceted project. How can people get involved or support the rail trail? There are several ways to get involved. Volunteering opportunities are available for those interested in helping with maintenance or events.

Local businesses can participate in the Business Connect program to engage with trail users. Donations are also welcome to support ongoing development and maintenance. Staying informed and spreading the word about the trail helps build community support.

It's wonderful to see such community engagement before we wrap up. Any tips for first time visitors to the trail? Absolutely. Plan your visit by checking the official Northern Rivers Rail Trail website for maps and information on open sections.

Wear comfortable clothing and bring water, especially during warmer months. If you're cycling, ensure your bike is in good condition. Respect the natural environment and local communities by staying on designated paths and disposing of waste properly.

And most importantly, take your time to enjoy the journey and the unique experiences each section offers. Great advice, Evie. That brings us to the end of today's episode.
